We’re Shelley and Eric, owners of Otoch Ixchel, a serene hacienda located in the magical town of Izamal. Though originally from the U.S. and Ireland, our hearts are firmly rooted in the Yucatán, a region we’ve come to love deeply. We’re excited to share this special place with you—a space where history, culture, and tranquility come together.
Otoch Ixchel, meaning "House of Ixchel," is named in honor of the Mayan goddess Ixchel (pronounced Ishchel) who was the Mayan goddess of the moon, love, pregnancy, medicine and textile work. She was the wife of the sun god Ak Kin and was often often depicted with symbols of transformation and protection—a snake, the moon, and a flower. She was often accompanied by a rabbit which the Mayans consider to be the similar to the man in the moon. In the “Chilam Balam”, a collection of books that recount historical events of the Mayan civilization, her name appears as Ixchel, which means “rainbow woman”
Izamal, with its golden streets and ancient pyramids, is a town where history lives in every corner. As one of Mexico’s Pueblos Mágicos, it’s perfect for those who seek more than the usual tourist experience—a true cultural escape. We welcome those who are eager to explore the history and spirit of the Yucatán in every step they take. Izamal and our hacienda serve as the perfect starting point for your exploration of the region.
Our hacienda blends modern comforts with the rich cultural tapestry of the Yucatán. Each room is thoughtfully designed, not just for comfort but to tell a story. Each room is themed around Ixchel’s symbols, offering a unique experience that goes beyond the ordinary. Whether you’re relaxing in the garden or exploring nearby archaeological sites, we hope your stay will be both restful and enriching.
While Otoch Ixchel offers a serene retreat, we encourage you to step out and discover the treasures of the Yucatán. Izamal itself is a marvel, but the surrounding region is filled with opportunities for adventure. Visit nearby archaeological sites like Chichén Itzá, Uxmal and Ek Balam, swim in the crystal-clear waters of our many cenotes, or take a day trip to the colonial charm of Valladolid or the vibrant streets of Mérida.
Our upcoming blog posts will dive deeper into these experiences, offering insider tips and stories to help you make the most of your time in the Yucatán. Whether you’re a history buff, a nature lover, or simply seeking peace and quiet, there’s something here for everyone.
We look forward to welcoming you and sharing the magic of this region. Stay tuned for more stories and insights into the wonders of the Yucatán.
