Some rooms you sleep in. This one you inhabit.
At 900 square feet, Cuarto Azul is the largest room at Otoch Ixchel — but size alone doesn’t explain why guests linger here. It’s the natural rock wall that greets you at the entrance, the 14-foot ceilings that open the space upward, the blue reclaimed pasta tile floors that catch the light differently at every hour of the day.
The bedroom is arranged around a king bed dressed in crisp linens with a woven blue throw, and a generous seating area — a sofa, armchairs, side tables, and a coffee table — that makes the room feel more like a suite than a guestroom. Macramé hangings, hand-carved occasional tables, artisan pottery, and two remarkable pieces anchor the space: a carved sculpture of Chaac, the Mayan rain god, and a commissioned hand-carved relief of Ixchel herself — depicted holding a rabbit in front of the full moon. The Mayans saw a rabbit in the moon where others see a man, and once you know that, you’ll never look at a full moon quite the same way. This is the first in a series of commissioned reliefs that runs throughout the hacienda.
The bathroom is something else entirely. L-shaped and gallery-like, it’s a space in its own right — original artwork and carefully chosen pieces hung along the walls, a large mirror, and a rainfall showerhead. One wall is almost entirely windows, looking out onto your private outdoor seating area: a secluded corner of the garden with a shade tree overhead and a view of the second pool. The boundary between inside and outside dissolves here in the best possible way.
Cuarto Azul is the most private room on the property. While the other rooms open onto the shared colonial terrace, this one has its own world — the garden, the dappled shade, the sound of nothing in particular. If you came here to disappear for a few days, this is the room.
This room is designed around Ixchel’s symbol of the Moon — Uh in Mayan — representing intuition, mystery, and the gentle cycles of renewal. It’s a good room for people who need to slow down.
