“Otoch Ixchel is incomparable to any other B&B I have experienced — a sanctuary of peace and serene beauty.”
— Joy B., USA
Some properties rent rooms. Otoch Ixchel, when taken in its entirety, becomes yours.
Four acres of lush gardens, two pools, three individually designed guest rooms sleeping up to six, a shared colonial terrace, and the kind of quiet that surprises people who didn’t realize they needed it. Located in Izamal — the Yellow City, one of Mexico’s most enchanting Pueblos Mágicos — five minutes’ walk from ancient Mayan pyramids and a short drive from Chichén Itzá, Uxmal, and the cenotes of the Yucatán.
The Rooms
Each room is named for one of the sacred symbols of the Mayan goddess Ixchel, and each is genuinely distinct:
Cuarto Azul — The Moon Room — is the largest at nearly 900 square feet, with a king bed, a generous sitting area, and its own private garden and outdoor seating area. The most private room on the property, with an L-shaped gallery bathroom and views of the second pool.
Cuarto Verde — The Snake Room — features a king bed, antique armoires, and windows on either side of the bed that create a natural cross-breeze. Traditional hammocks hang on the wall as a nod to how many Yucatécans still sleep today.
Cuarto Rosa — The Flower Room — has a queen bed, a floral sofa, a henequen plantation truck repurposed as a coffee table, and the most light-filled bathroom in the hacienda, with a window opening onto the second garden and a traditional hummingbird tapestry.
All three rooms feature commissioned hand-carved Ixchel reliefs, local artisan furniture, macramé hangings, rainfall showerheads, and a hand-curated guide to the Mayan legends surrounding you. A full depiction of Ixchel watches over the shared terrace.
Breakfast
Each morning we serve fresh seasonal fruit — mango, papaya, dragon fruit, melon, and whatever the markets brought in that week — alongside yoghurt with granola and Mayan honey, toast with Irish butter, fresh orange juice, and French press coffee. Served on the terrace or at a private table by the pool.
For Special Occasions
Otoch Ixchel lends itself naturally to celebration. The gardens, the colonial architecture, and the golden light of Izamal make it an exceptional setting for intimate weddings, vow renewals, milestone anniversaries, and private photography. Contact us to discuss your vision.
Your Hosts
Shelley and Eric — originally from Ireland and Ohio, now firmly rooted in Izamal — are on hand throughout your stay. Between them they’ve visited 55 countries and moved here because they fell in love with this corner of the world. They know the Yucatán well and are happy to help you find the parts of it most people miss.
